A: Talking too much is usually not a symptom of length of set but rather a symptom of taking too long to deliver content that could have delivered in a shorter amount of time.

Some people are simply more entertaining to listen to than others.  You may be at a stage in your career when you haven’t yet found the rhythm, content and timing to hold the listener’s attention.  Hey, some people have to work at it harder than others.

Here are some hints that may help you achieve goals that both you and your PD can appreciate.

  1. 1)50% of what a jock says can be distilled down to fewer words.  Listen to one of your air checks, find a break and write down everything you say word for word.  Then go back and take out all the stuff you’ve said twice, find portions of the sets could have been said with fewer words, cross out superfluous items.  you’ll probably find that you can still get your point across in an entertaining manor with simply fewer words.

  2. 2)Try to paint pictures when you talk.  Paint pictures engages the listener’s mind more than just the simple facts.  Painting pictures also makes everything you say more sticky to the brain and make your banter more endearing no matter the length.

  3. 3)Mix in your point of view if you can.  This is another thing that makes what you say more engaging.
